I am not sure if ft Decatur and Cowles station are the same place. The fort is on a very high bluff and it would be difficult to walk down to the rivers edge. I am going to try to make a "you tube" video of the Ft. Decatur sometime in future. I have always called it fort decatur because of the bronze plaque located on a large stone at the site. If you can get any more information about Cowles, I would like to know. Thanks!!

could Cowles station be the old Train Depot at Milstead?? through the woods, it is less than a mile to the river

I have been to Ft. Decatur several times decades ago. It is located on private land and is very difficult to locate. It is not located exactly where the above map shows. it is halfway between the red marker and highway 229. It is located in a heavily forested area on a bluff overlooking the Tallapoosa river. Kudzu vines have taken over much of the trees and forest nearby the fort. The fort is approximately 75' x 75' square. You can see where earth was dug and what looks like a ditch creates the shape of the fort. I can only guess, cut timbers were placed vertically like a fence along this square earthen shape. There is a permanent marker located inside the fort, placed there by an historical association. Ft Decatur is a special hidden place which symbolizes the westward expansion of the USA.
