I was a weather observer there from Jan of 77 through August of 77 when weather ops were turned over to civilian hands. It was an experience to say the least.

my name is John Duke I was TSgt, Chief of Amin (I was in charge of myself as I was only admin on site)Sep 1978 thru Oct 1979. During that time site personnel consisted of approx 36 military and 38 Civ Contractors. There wasn't a lot of fraternizing between mil & civ. However, to say we took care of our own would be inaccurate. We "looked after" our own. If one of us had a problem, all he need do is tell one of us everyone would help take care of that problem. It was a long year and you filled it as much as you could. For example, I helped run our small site BX, ran the ceramics hobby shop, helped look after the site rec vehicle, was chaplain's asst (on the rare occasion we had a chaplain on site and played in the Tatalina All American Marching Kazoo Band. The band was made up of 6 guys playing whatever instruments we could. The band was a great morale boost everyone on site seemed to enjoy it. I was at Tatalina with about 70 guys (some rotated out while replacements came in). These men were the finest in the Air Force and I will be forever proud to have served with them. God bless you guys I pray you are well. Captain John Duke retired.

I worked as a civilian foreman at the Tatalina AFS power generation plant in 1966. It was a beautiful site but a traumatic change for me as I went there from Kindley AFB, Bermuda. That was many years ago so I remember very little about the personnel there. I recall vividly the sight of Mount McKinley each day, the abandoned quonset hut bordello on the road to Tokotna. It was already closed down when I arrived but I'll always remember the pink quonset hut alongside the Tokotna road. I left Tatalina in November 1966.
