I was part of the 1839 engineering group stationed at kafb, missippi.we installed a phased array in January & February in 1985. weather was -40 with a windchill of -80 at the three miles up- top camp radomes. had to leave upon successful completion of retrofitted installation (1 MONTH, 18 DAYS). saw eagles fly, caught cabin fever, and went snow-blind 50-100 ft. from camp-but we found our way back with god's help and a little luck. saw the aurora borealis laying upside down in a pickup truck after leaving a retirement party for the RCA manager. I've never left Alaska in my heart since then. but my team chief- GS-17, was from mobile, alabama and was extremely anxious to get home. we were not allowed to operate new equipment, but had to plastic-wrap it up. flew out on a C-130; eventually after the first one broke down on the tatalina airport runway. proud to have served in the 1839 EIG, KAFB,mississippi. john Denver would have been proud as I saw a bald eagle fly.to the men I served with I would like to salute them as my comrades and what we did so quickly on the mountain. please share your experiences with me.sincerely-RICHARD R. YOUNG.
