My father, Roger A. Niceley (name misspelled in newspaper as Nicely) was working in the Tecolote tunnel when it exploded in 1951. He was injured, though only slightly (broken tailbone when a beam he was carrying on his shoulder came down on his back when the explosion knocked him on his face.) He got up and ran back into the tunnel to help others. He was working the night shift. When he didn't come home in the morning, I asked the lady who ran Bam's Auto Court if I could call the police. She allowed it, though she was puzzled. I asked a police officer in a little girl's 11-year old voice "Sir, was there an accident at the Tecolote tunnel last night?" The officer, very carefully, asked "Why do you ask, little girl?" "Because my Daddy works there, and he didn't come home this morning." He asked if I was with an adult, I gave her the phone, heard her give the officer our address. About 5 minutes later, a police car came there. The officer gently told me that my Daddy had been injured a bit, and they were keeping him in the hospital for a day to make sure he was all right. The landlady assured him I would be safe (my dog Lady, normally gentle, would have torn the arm off anyone offering harm to me) and the landlady gave me meals. I did find an article in the Santa Barbara paper about the explosion, subsequently moved, and lost it. I'd sure like to have a copy of that report. I'm doing a massive genealogy project for my family, and would like my heirs to have information about our family members than "Joe Doe, born, married, died."
