I remember riding through the Ox Bow burn from Crow Road to Hwy 101 at Gardiner, just North of Reedsport. Dad would drive and we'd look out the window and see the changes over the years. The first time I heard Hey Jude was on a drive through the Ox Bow.

At first the area reminded Mom of the Tillamook Burn. Tall black snags and a burned landscape was all around. But as the years went by we saw that new trees were planted. We watched the forest grow and started to see the deer return. We would see squirrels, skunks, and even a bobcat on our drives. We would drive up the logging roads and have picnics on the landings and look over the edge down to the creeks way below.

After a while the trees started to shade the roads. We could no longer see the burned trees on the ridge tops. The draws and valleys started to fill in. But we kept going through there. It was still one of our favorite ways to the Coast.

After I met my sweetheart of more than 40 years, we would go that way to the Coast when we wanted to see the progress of this beautiful forest. We always wanted to fish the Smith River, but just never got around to it. But we had such a good time there and you could go so many back ways to so many destinations.

Lots of good memories from a tragic event. Thankfully it has healed with good stewardship from everyone involved.
