I learned to fly out of gunn field. if you could t/o and land there you could set a plane down anywhere. my first instructor was George abarr sr. He was a laid back pall mall chain snoking teacher. Gunn field lost their lease and I was having to travel to fulton co. airport which I hated. gunn field was only about 10 min. by bike and 2 min. in my 1971 mach 1 mustang. I came back to gunn and started working the radio, fuel tanks and any thing else that needed to be done. for every day I worked I got a hour flying time free either with or without instructor. my instructor was named Bill Cain. what a nut. don't get me wrong, he was trying to make or break me. we went out one day to do some t/o and landings. after the third flight 1/2 way down to take off he instructed me to stop the plane. he opened the door and told me to go out and make 3 t/o and landings and taxi the plane to ramp, top off fuel and tie it down. I had flown a plane all alone. that was a great feeling. I wonder if bill cain is alive. he was a civil war book.
