When I was a child, my extended family would gather at Sunlight Cemetery on "Decoration Day" (as we called it, because my family roots are Southern) a.k.a. Memorial Day. There is a church there also. First, we would have a church service. Then, the adult men would work on the graves, filling them with dirt where needed, cleaning off leaves, and trimming back the white peony bushes that grew in abundance on the graves. The women would set up tables outside of the cemetery and spread out an enormous amount of food with their individual specialties represented. It was a sight to behold. The children would run around playing until lunch was served. Cousins would renew friendships. Everyone enjoyed seeing each other. My great, great grandparents, great-grandfather, maternal grandparents, brother, aunts, uncles, and cousins are buried there.
