My first pie social happened inside the Elim School. I stayed with a friend on their farm just east of the school and her mother spent the day cooking and baking. I suppose the outdoors kept two young girls around 3rd grade age to play outside. Maybe we did go inside to help but my friend had two older sisters that were of an age to be better at helping. My friend and I were tom boys anyway. We arrived at the school just before dark and I am trying to think but their may have been a pot luck before the announcement of the pie social. In my memory a pie is purchased and the baker will sit down to the table with that person and have a piece of pie right off. The social side is they do not know just whom baked what. A person could end up sitting down with someone they do not know at all. This just brought the community together and introduced a person to more locals. My friends mother made sure there was a pie for every female in the family and one for me. Then the men of the family bought some other pies to take home. It was fun, tasty, educational and a great way to spend a cold night.
